"Atlético Madrid are accelerating a January move for Bruno Fernandes"

The Spanish article behind the claim names no source and says itself that Atlético have made no formal offer. Since it ran, Fernandes has settled his row with Michael Carrick and is back in contention for United's next league match.

Where it started

Atlético Madrid's name was first attached to Bruno Fernandes on 6 October, by Mario Roldán Martínez at Fichajes. He credited CaughtOffside, placed the interest in the summer of 2027 and wrote that there was no record of a formal request or of talks between the clubs.

The January version is dated 27 October, at the same site, under Héctor Andreu's name. It says Mateu Alemany is following Fernandes with the aim of bringing him to the Metropolitano and that Diego Simeone would welcome him, and it names no source for either. It also says, in its own words, that for now there is no confirmed formal offer, and that the main obstacle would be a financial agreement with United. The page's title is where the January window appears.

What happened next

FourFourTwo ran it the same day under Mark White's name. Atlético were "accelerating" a move this January and Fernandes was "considering leaving", both in quotation marks and both credited to Fichajes. The line about no formal offer did not travel with them.

On 28 October the transfer round-up at Sports Illustrated listed Atlético as "exploring a move for Fernandes in January", citing Fichajes, under a headline that had him leaving United in January. That morning El Gol Digital, under Andrés Guzmán's name, repeated the Alemany and Simeone lines almost word for word without saying where they came from, but kept the sentence that Atlético had made no formal offer.

What was checked

Fernandes is under contract at United until June 2027, and the club hold an option to extend it by a year. Neither club has said anything on the record about a transfer.

The talk grew out of a row. After the 4-1 defeat at Como in the Champions League on 21 October, Fernandes said on television that the tactics were "on the manager and staff to see it, not me". Michael Carrick kept him on the bench throughout the 3-0 home defeat by Bournemouth on 25 October.

The two men met at Carrington on Tuesday 27 October, apart from a meeting of the full squad. Fernandes is back in contention for Saturday's league match at Chelsea.

Verdict

Misleading. The article the claim rests on names no source and says itself that Atlético have made no formal offer; the English retellings supplied the urgency and dropped that sentence. The week since has put Fernandes back in Carrick's plans, not on a plane to Madrid.
