Mark Flekken started it. He rushed off his line in the 14th minute to push the ball away from Bilal El Khannouss, and Ermedin Demirovic put the rebound in from close range. Eight minutes later Jamie Leweling bundled in another loose ball after a corner.

Leverkusen answered with a corner of their own. Aleix García delivered it in the 28th minute and Patrik Schick headed in; Dennis Seimen got to the header but could not keep it out.

The second half was six minutes old when Stuttgart pulled clear again. Chris Führich found El Khannouss, who drove a low shot in from the edge of the area for 3-1, and Demirovic scored his second in the 65th minute. Ibrahim Maza headed in Miguel Gutiérrez's cross in the 79th, but Leverkusen got no closer.

Sebastian Hoeneß's side had lost their two previous league games before winning in the cup in midweek. They are tenth on nine points, four behind Leverkusen, who drop to sixth on 13; the gap was seven when the afternoon began.
