The penalty came from a tackle that did not need making. Rômulo had the ball on the right side of the Schalke area when Satoshi Tanaka swept at it from behind and took the Brazilian's legs instead. Loris Karius went the right way, but too late, and Antonio Nusa drove the kick into the bottom-left corner with his right foot.
Leipzig could have been further ahead by half-time. Timo Becker turned a free kick into his own net in the second minute, ruled out because Willi Orbán was offside, and Rômulo tapped in just before the break after Karius saved from Brajan Gruda, only for the referee to rule that the ball had gone out of play when David Raum crossed. Schalke's best moment was Adil Aouchiche's free kick off the crossbar.
After the break Schalke did not put a shot on target. The second goal began with Ridle Baku, on for two minutes, carrying a counter-attack down the right; his pass along the ground found Nusa, who touched it to his left for Rômulo, and the Brazilian beat Karius in the bottom-right corner for his fourth league goal in six games.
Schalke have drawn twice and lost twice at home without a goal, and they stay 16th; Union Berlin can push them into the relegation zone with a win or a draw against Köln on Sunday. They go to Hoffenheim next. Leipzig, fourth for now, are at home to Manchester City in the Champions League on Wednesday and then to Augsburg.
