Atlético gave Bayern plenty of the ball but kept them largely in front of their defensive line. Julián Álvarez went close early, while Karl sent a chance over before the break. Bayern had control of the game, but Atlético were still keeping them out.

The breakthrough came nine minutes into the second half. A deflected Tom Bischof effort dropped between Robin Le Normand and Marc Pubill, and the two defenders failed to take control. Karl needed no second invitation. He seized the ball and lifted his finish over Jan Oblak.

Diego Simeone responded with three changes, bringing on Koke, Ademola Lookman and Kang-in Lee. Atlético found more room to attack, and Marcos Llorente forced Manuel Neuer into a save. But the improvement came with a cost. As the home side pushed forward, Bayern found the space that had been missing earlier.

Kane picked out Laimer inside the area and the Austrian drove the ball past Oblak to make it 2-0 in the 74th minute. Dayot Upamecano later had a goal ruled out for a foul on the goalkeeper, but Atlético had little left to threaten Bayern's lead. The defensive organisation that had held for an hour had been undone, and the space opened up by the search for an equaliser only made Bayern more comfortable.
