Kane sets up both Bayern goals in Mainz and scores neither
Harry Kane laid on Joshua Kimmich's first goal of the season and Lennart Karl's second-half finish, while Mainz had their equaliser before half-time ruled out for offside. Bayern stay top on goal difference, but lost Manuel Neuer to a foot injury in the move that produced it.

Harry Kane did not score in Mainz, and Bayern still won 2-1 on his two passes. The first came 14 minutes in, after Bayern had forced Mainz to lose the ball: Kane took it and played it a few metres across to Joshua Kimmich, who struck it from about 17 metres into the top right corner for his first goal of the season.

Mainz thought they had the equaliser before half-time. Nadiem Amiri's free kick came in from the left, Manuel Neuer came for it and missed it, and Lee Jae-sung put the ball in at the far post. The goal was ruled out for offside after a long review, and by then Neuer had hurt his foot in the same move and Jonas Urbig had come on in his place. It was Neuer's 550th Bundesliga match, the one that made him the oldest player Bayern have fielded in the league.
Lennart Karl missed in the area on 55 minutes and scored from short range two minutes later, when Kane held the ball on the right of the box and slid it across to him. Kaishu Sano hit the post a minute after that. Robin Zentner had already kept Kane out in the first half, and he stopped Kimmich from a tight angle in the 61st minute.
Phillip Tietz headed into the far corner deep in stoppage time, too late to matter. It was Mainz's fourth defeat in a row in all competitions, and they have one point from five league games at home.
Bayern have now gone 31 away matches without defeat since they lost on this ground in December 2024, and they lead Dortmund on goal difference into the international break. What they take with them is Neuer's foot, the same one that kept him out of three matches before he returned against Atlético Madrid.
