Everton left St James’ Park with a 1-0 win after Lukas Hornicek failed to hold Tyrique George’s second-half shot, allowing Thierno Barry to score into an empty net. Newcastle had chances to respond but never found the quality to recover from the mistake.

The first half offered little to suggest either side would take control. Harvey Barnes tried to create openings from the left, while Joelinton had an effort blocked, but Newcastle struggled to make their pressure count. Everton were more purposeful, although Jake O’Brien and Harrison Armstrong both missed opportunities before the break.

The game turned four minutes into the second half. George's shot from the left was one Hornicek should have dealt with, but the goalkeeper allowed it to slip beneath him. Barry was there to take advantage, turning a routine save into the goal that separated the sides.

Newcastle had their moments after falling behind. Anthony Elanga came close at the far post, but Everton cleared the danger, while Jordan Pickford kept out a late effort from Yoane Wissa. The visitors remained a threat themselves, and Newcastle's search for an equaliser never developed into sustained pressure.

Jacob Ramsey's dismissal in stoppage time made the task harder still. The substitute was sent off after receiving two yellow cards, leaving Newcastle to finish with ten men. It was another difficult evening for Matthias Jaissle, whose side had already lost 3-1 to Everton in the League Cup five days earlier. Losing twice to the same opponent in such a short spell has left Newcastle with more than a result to explain.
