The deadlock was broken in the 79th minute. After a VAR review, Hoffenheim were awarded a penalty for Edmond Tapsoba's foul on Fisnik Asllani, and Andrej Kramarić, who had come on for Adam Hložek in the 65th minute, scored it. The goal was Hoffenheim's 1000th in the Bundesliga. Kramarić then set up Alexander Prass, who finished a counter-attack with a left-footed shot from distance in the 89th minute. Deep into stoppage time, Kramarić hit the crossbar on another counter and Max Moerstedt scored the rebound from five metres.

The game had its share of incident. Leverkusen lost Moussa Diaby to injury before half-time. Just before the second goal, Moerstedt and a Leverkusen defender clashed heads in midfield; play went on, Prass scored, and the defender was carried off on a stretcher, with stoppage time running long because of the treatment. Prass, already booked for a rough challenge, was then sent off on a second yellow card for taking his shirt off while celebrating, and Leverkusen coach Carles Martínez was booked on the touchline.

The result ended Leverkusen's winning run. They missed a chance to go second for the time being and stay fourth on 13 points, four behind leaders Borussia Dortmund, while Hoffenheim are 10th on 9 points.

Hoffenheim travel to Werder Bremen next, and Leverkusen host VfB Stuttgart, with both matches on Saturday at 15:30.
