Karl Hein's long ball settled it: Werder Bremen's goalkeeper found Niclas Füllkrug in the 57th minute, and the striker fought off the Hoffenheim defence to score. Eren Dinkci added the second for a 2-0 win that ended Hoffenheim's run of four straight league victories in Bremen.

The goal put Füllkrug in Werder's history. He has now scored in seven Bundesliga games in a row, something only Rudi Völler had managed in a Werder shirt, in 1982-83. It was his ninth goal of the season, and it came minutes after Oliver Baumann had turned his low drive from 20 metres round the post.

Hoffenheim had more of the ball before the break and came closest to scoring when Amos Pieper cleared Adam Hlozek's header off the line in the 45th minute. Werder had already lost Mitchell Weiser, injured in the 16th minute on his return from a long lay-off.

Weiser's replacement finished the match. Hoffenheim were pushing for an equaliser when they failed to clear, Marco Grüll moved the ball on to Dinkci, and he cut inside Ozan Kabak and curled it into the far corner eight minutes from time.

"The key today was again the way we worked against the ball, the intensity we still have in the 90th minute at 2-0," Füllkrug said. Werder are unbeaten in seven league games and sit a point behind third-placed Freiburg on 15; they go to Stuttgart next, while Hoffenheim, still on nine, are at home to Schalke.
