Upamecano opened the scoring in the 16th minute, the defender finishing a move in which, as Yahoo Sports described it, he played the role of a pacey striker. Gnabry doubled the lead in the 42nd minute, and Bayern went in 2-0 up at half-time.

Freiburg pulled a goal back in the second half and put Bayern under pressure in what Bulinews called a dramatic comeback scare. The home side's hopes ended late on, when Olise took advantage of a Freiburg error to make it 3-1 and settle the match.

Bayern played without head coach Vincent Kompany, who had been taken to hospital before the game.

The win leaves Bayern Munich first after 7 rounds on 17 pts, level with Borussia Dortmund but ahead on goal difference. Freiburg stay third on 13 pts.
