The first goal to count was not the first Atlético scored. Morten Hjulmand had the ball in the net in the 16th minute and saw it ruled out for offside. In the 36th, Baena's pass from the left got past Jon Ander Olasagasti, who could not clear it, and Alejandro Grimaldo, arriving inside the area, beat Mathew Ryan with his left foot.
The second was all Baena's making. He ran at Levante from his own half and slid Giuliano Simeone through; Simeone won the race with Nacho Pérez and finished with his left foot in the 62nd minute.
Levante were not without chances. Jan Oblak had to save from Dani Requena early on, and the home side kept coming after the second goal. Yet nothing they hit found a way past Oblak, and Atlético's back line held for the whole afternoon.
Levante stay on ten points. Atlético's next two matches are Bayern Munich in the Champions League and then Barcelona, who can take first place back tonight.
