Massimiliano Allegri has described Napoli's shortage of available players in striking terms. The squad is down to 13, he said before travelling to Portugal, with the situation so stretched that training has become difficult. Rasmus Højlund has recovered from his fever, but Kevin De Bruyne still needs to be assessed after an ankle problem.

The confirmed losses of Giovanni Di Lorenzo and Mathías Olivera leave Allegri without both of his first-choice full-backs. They join a longer list of unavailable players, forcing Napoli to reconsider how they cover the defensive positions. The problem is not simply the number of absentees, but how much of the team's established structure has been affected.

Porto cannot afford to treat that situation as a guarantee. Francesco Farioli has pointed out that his own squad also has absences, and insists Napoli retain enough quality to remain competitive. William Gomes will miss the match, while Oskar Pietuszewski trained with the team and remains a possible option. Farioli has also been careful not to underestimate a side that has won two league titles in recent years.

The Portuguese side have their own European problem to solve. They have lost all three of their opening Champions League matches, conceding the first goal in each, despite winning their last three domestic fixtures without conceding. That contrast gives Porto a clear standard to meet: the control they have shown in Portugal must survive the first setback that Europe brings.

Napoli's injury list gives the home side an opportunity, but it does not remove the need for a complete performance. Porto must make their numerical advantage count before Allegri's remaining quality has time to settle the game.

## Our call

Porto should have the opportunity to impose themselves against a depleted Napoli side, but the visitors retain enough attacking quality to make this a difficult evening.

## Coming in

Porto have won three of their last five competitive matches, including their last three league fixtures, and remain top of the Primeira Liga after ten consecutive wins.

Napoli have won two, drawn one and lost two of their last five competitive matches. Their latest result was a 2-0 defeat away to Juventus, leaving them eighth in Serie A.

## Between them

The clubs have met four times in competitive European football, across two two-legged ties. Napoli won both meetings in October and November 1974, each by 1-0, while Porto progressed in March 2014 with a 3-2 aggregate victory after winning 1-0 at home and drawing 2-2 in Naples.

## The hinge

Porto's ability to avoid conceding first will be crucial: Napoli's depleted defence gives them an opening, but another early setback would allow the visitors to play on their own terms.

## Missing

Porto will be without William Gomes, while Oskar Pietuszewski remains a doubt after a thigh problem.

Napoli will be without Giovanni Di Lorenzo and Mathías Olivera following muscular injuries. They are joined by David Neres, Alisson Santos, Alessandro Buongiorno, Benoît Badiashile, Stanislav Lobotka, Leonardo Spinazzola and Costantino Favasuli. Kevin De Bruyne remains doubtful with an ankle problem.
