Unbeaten Lazio go to Sassuolo without Rovella and Marušić in Serie A's first midweek round
Lazio, second and unbeaten after eight games, play their third match in a week at a Sassuolo side without a win in four league games. Gennaro Gattuso is without Nicolò Rovella, Adam Marušić and Albert Guðmundsson, while Alberto Aquilani is still missing Jay Idzes and Fedde Leysen.

Round 9 is the first midweek round of the Serie A season, and it takes Lazio to Reggio Emilia on the back of what Flashscore calls a record-breaking start. They have won all four away games this season, at Bologna, Udine, Venice and Juventus in Turin, and have let in only five goals. Sassuolo, 14th, have kept their home form steady even as results elsewhere have slipped.
A Sassuolo side that always seems to score at home and never stops conceding should make for an open, high-scoring evening in Reggio Emilia with both nets disturbed, and Lazio, legs heavy from a crowded week, are only narrowly preferred to come away with the win ahead of a draw or a home victory.
Lazio are without Rovella, Marušić and Guðmundsson, and Andrea Pinamonti is doubtful with an illness that kept him out against Parma. Gattuso said after the win over Parma that choices would be made with Sassuolo in mind. Sassuolo are without Idzes, Leysen, Koné and Daniel Boloca, though FotMob reports Boloca back in training. Aquilani left Sebastiano Esposito on the bench for the whole game at Como, saying he had made changes because his side played again two days later.
Sassuolo come in after a 2-0 defeat at Como and a 4-2 loss at Frosinone, and their last league win came against Juventus in round 4. They are unbeaten in three home league games (W2 D1), have scored in seven home matches in a row, but have conceded in 11 Serie A games in a row. Lazio beat Parma 2-1 on Saturday through Kenneth Taylor and a Diego Carlos own goal, a week after winning 3-0 at Juventus.
Lazio have lost only once in their last seven games against Sassuolo, 1-0 at the Mapei in September 2025, when Aliou Fadera scored. In March 2026 Lazio won 2-1 in Rome with a Marušić goal in the 90+2nd minute, after Daniel Maldini and Armand Laurienté had traded early goals.
