"Liverpool want to bring Trent Alexander-Arnold back from Real Madrid"

The story grew from a list of English clubs said to be watching him. The reporters who asked about Liverpool directly say he is not a target, and his Real Madrid contract runs to 2031.

Where it started

TEAMtalk, 26 September, Graeme Bailey: intermediaries assessing options for Trent Alexander-Arnold had approached Liverpool and Arsenal, with Manchester City and Chelsea contacted in the same discussions. The same report said the Real Madrid right-back was not contemplating a move at that stage, that there was no push from him to leave, and that a January move was not on the radar of either the player or the club. Bailey returned to it on 19 October: Real Madrid would consider a suitable offer, the player was weighing his future, and Liverpool were among the clubs watching, with Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City.

What happened next

SoccerNews relayed the September report on 28 September. On 22 October TEAMtalk wrote that Alexander-Arnold was considering a return to England and that Liverpool were interested in a reunion, while putting Chelsea at the front of the queue on the word of Chelsea writer Simon Phillips. On 24 October it headlined that Liverpool had reached a decision after Real Madrid opened the door; the decision, in the text, was not to move. Anfield Index carried both strands on 25 October under a headline saying Liverpool had no interest, while noting a reported interest in a move in 2027. On 27 October the Liverpool reporter David Lynch said on the Anfield Index podcast that bringing him back would be an emotional decision rather than a smart one.

What was checked

Real Madrid announced his signing on 30 May 2025, on a contract from 1 June 2025 to 30 June 2031. Pete O'Rourke of Football Insider reported on 24 October that he is not a target for Liverpool at this moment in time. Ben Fernandes Santos, a Madrid journalist, wrote on X on 23 October that, according to his sources, Liverpool do not have him on their radar for now. Guillem Balagué told talkSPORT that a January exit was not on and that the player has no intention of leaving. CaughtOffside, citing Real Madrid's figures, puts him at three starts in the club's nine La Liga matches and 345 minutes in all competitions. Nothing from Liverpool, Real Madrid, the player or his representatives addresses a return.

Verdict

Misleading. Liverpool's name entered the story as one of four English clubs approached or watching, in reports that also said the player was not looking to leave. The return to Anfield was added in the retelling. The two reporters who addressed Liverpool's position directly say he is not a target, his contract runs to 2031, and nobody involved has spoken. Claim dated 26 September 2026; verdict dated 27 October 2026.
